Abstract

Combining ability was analysed using a diallel cross of 10 black gram lines. Highly significant gca and sca variances were found both in F1 and F2 generations for all the characters. However, the estimates of σ2s were greater than their respective σ2g for all the characters, indicating predominance of nonadditive gene action On the basis of per se performance and gca effects, the good general combiners common in both F1 and F2 generations were H 76-1 and t9 for days to maturity, g 104 and 4-5-2 for clusters per plant. Pant u-19 and 4-5-2 for number of pods per plant, t 9 for harvest index, Pant u-19 and T 9 for grain yield, and Culture 1 and H 76-1 for protein content.
