Of the four methods of selection, viz, mass, pure line, ssdes and bulk, employed in tomato improvement, the ssdes method was found superior in breeding for number of fruits/plant, yield/plant, early flowering, fruit set and harvest, and fruit weight. The level of resistance to bacterial wilt increased from 77.87 to 90.14% under ssdes method.
