Abstract

Short-fruit mutants in green and white varieties of Trichosanthes anguina Linn, were isolated in the M2 generation after combined treatment of seeds with X rays, EMS and GA3. The two mutants, GSF (Green Short Fruit) and WSF (White Short Fruit), bred true in subsequent generations. The F1 hybrids between GSF, WSF and their respective parents with long fruits were intermediate in fruit length. in the F2 generation the short fruit character was inherited as monogenic recessive. The WSF and GSF mutants had 56.6% and 64.8% punicic acid in the seed oil compared to 48.1% and 47.1% of their respective parents.
