Identification of Genes for Hybrid Necrosis in Wheat

Hybrid necrosis genes in 7 Tritieum durum and 106 Tritieum acstivum strains comprising 81 spring and 25 winter types were identified by crossing with two tester strains, C 306 (Ne1) and Kalyan Sona (Ne2). All durums and indigenous acstivums were Ne1 carriers. Winter wheals, except variety Odesskaya, were either Ne2 carriers or noncarriers. Ne2 was predominant in the exotic and recently developed Indian semidwarf wheats developed after hybridization with wheats from CIMMYT (Mexico) programme.
