Inheritance studies in a cross D 6-2-2 X HY-256 Purple in rice indicated that bent node was dominant over normal and was due to four interacting genes of which two were complementary designated as Bna and Bnb, one inhibitory gene, I-Bn, and one anti-inhibitory gene, Ai-Bn, to give the segregation ratio of 117 bent:139 normal nodes. For culm angle, erectness was recessive to spreading/semispreading and was due to five interacting genes of which there were complementary duplicate genes designated as Era1, Era2 and Era3, and two inhibitory duplicate genes, I-Er1 and I-Er2, to give the segregation ratio of 54 erect: 970 semispreading/spreading culms. An analysis of the combined segregation data revealed the independence of these two characters.
