Nature and inheritance of leaf rust resistance of wheat cultivar HD2009
Abstract
The leaf rust resistant cultivar HD2009 and the reference line for the gene Lr34 (RL6058), show high infection types against race 77-5 both on seedlings and adult plants suggesting absence of hypersensitive resistance in these two wheats. The field resistance of HD2009 to this race is due to small uredia as compared to those seen on Agra Local, a susceptible cultivar. The latency period on Agra Local was longer than that of HD2009. The reference line RL6058 developed smaller uredia and showed longer latency period as compared to HD2009 and Agra Local. The F2 generation from the cross HD2009/RL6058 transgressed for field resistance as well as susceptibility to leaf rust indicating that resistance of HD2009 is not due to Lr34. The F2 and F3 plants from the cross HD2009/Agra Local also showed similar transgression, which is attributed to recombination of factors contributing towards resistance, both from resistant and susceptible parents.
