Abstract

The inheritance of resistance of a CIMMYT derived line CIM25 against most virulent race of leaf rust, 77-5 was studied. The low terminal disease severity of this line in field tests was ascribed to two dominant genes. One of these genes has been identified to be a hypersensitive seedling resistance gene, which remained effective at adult plant stage also. The second gene is the adult plant resistance gene, Lr34, which confers durable resistance to leaf rust. As resistance against race 77-5 is less frequent in bread wheat, the gene for seedling resistance in line CIM25 may find application in wheat breeding programs.
