Notification of chickpea variety GNG-1488 (Sangam)
Abstract
GNG-1488 (Sangam, 1C 549657) is a high yielding disease and insect tolerant variety of desi chickpea (Cicer arietinum L) developed by Agricultural Research Station, Rajasthan Agricultural University, Sriganganagar. This variety was released by Rajasthan State Seed Sub-Committee in its 27th meeting for late sown (first week of December) conditions of Rajasthan State on 15.03.2007, subsequently it was notified by Central Sub-Committee on Crop Standards, Notification and Release of Variety vide Notification No.S.O. 1703 (E) dated 05.10.2007 for cultivation in the state of Rajasthan. The Sangam variety was developed through conventional pedigree method of selection from a cross between KPG 79-3 X GNG-469. It was evaluated in multilocation coordinated varietal trials conducted by AICRP on Chickpea during Rabi 2002–03 to 2004–05 under late sown situations. On the basis at weighted mean over locations - years, this variety showed 11.2, 17.2, 17.9 and 19.4 percent grain yield superiority over checks, BG-372, RSG-963, H-82-2 and PBG-1, respectively. In the trials conducted in the State of Rajasthan during 2003–04 to 2005–06, this variety showed 18.2, 24.7, 26.0 and 27.3 percent grain yield superiority over the cultivars, namely, BG-372, RSG-963, H-82-2 and PBG-1, respectively. In adaptive and agronomical trials also, it showed more than 15% grain yield superiority over best check H-82-2. The average grain yield of GNG-1488 recorded was 1809 kg/ha at 18 locations over three years of testing in All India Coordinated Late Sown Varietal Trials. In Rajasthan State also, it recorded 1825 kg/ha average grain yield over 12 locations-years during 2002–03 to 2005–06 under late sown situations. This variety showed a good level of tolerance against Helicoverpa armigera and diseases like wilt and root rot. Under late sown situation, it matures in about 134 days. It has average grain size of 15.8 g/100 seeds. Sangam can be easily identified by its smooth and brown testa colour. The plant type is semi erect with medium height.
