Notification of kabuli chickpea variety GNG 1499 (Gauri)

Variety GNG 1499 (IC 549658) also known as ‘Gauri’ is a kabuli chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) developed by Agricultural Research Station, Rajasthan Agricultural University, Snganganagar. This variety was released by Rajasthan State Seed Sub-Committee in its 27^th meeting for normal sown irrigated conditions of Rajasthan State on 15.03.2007, subsequently it was notified by Central Sub Committee on Crop Standards, Notification and Release of Variety vide Notification No.S.O. 1703(E) dated 05.10.2007 for cultivation in the state of Rajasthan. The earlier popular kabuli chickpea varieties like L 550 and ICCV 32 in the State of Rajasthan were very small seeded ranging between 16 to 20 g per 100 seeds. Keeping farmers requirements in view, a programme of developing a kabuli chickpea variety with bolder seed size was initiated. Two diverse parents GNG 421 and BG 267 were crossed and intense selection to identify a bold seeded genotype was done from F₂ generation onward following pedigree method of breeding. As a result, a new kabuli chickpea genotype GNG 1499 was developed, which has bolder seed size of 29.6 g/100 seeds. This genotype was tested in multilocation coordinated varietal trials conducted by All India Coordinated Research Project on Chickpea during Rabi 2002–03 to 2003–04. The average grain yield of GNG 1499 recorded was 15.21 kg/ha at 14 locations which showed 21.7, 20.0, 15.3 and 4.5 percent grain yield superiority over checks BG 1003, HK 98–155, BG 1053 and L 550, respectively. In the trials conducted in the State of Rajasthan during 2002–03 to 2005–06, Gauri gave an average grain yield of 1797 kg/ha with significant advantage of 30.9, 39.2, 27.4 and 12.0 percent over checks BG-1003, HK-98-155, BG-1053 and L-550, respectively. This variety also showed average level of tolerance against diseases and insect. It matures in about 143 days. The plant type is semi-erect of medium height. The seed colour of this variety is beige while flower colour is white.The seed shape is like owl's head.
