Vivek Maize Hybrid 21 is a single cross hybrid (CM 212 x V 341) developed by Vivekananda Parvatiya Krishi Anusandhan Sansthan (ICAR), Almora and was identified by All India Annual Workshop and subsequently released by Central Sub-committee on Crop standards, Notification and Release of Variety Vide Notification No. SO 122 (E) dated 6.2.2007 for the commercial cultivation in Zone I (J&K, HP and UK); Zone II (Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, West UP) and Zone IV (Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu).
Vivek Maize Hybrid 21 was selected as a hybrid in station trial for yield and other ancillary attributes Experimental Farm, Hawalbagh and subsequently tested in co-ordinated programme (IET/AET) as FH 3211 for three years by All India Co-ordinated Research Project. Vivek Maize Hybrid 21 was evaluated in Zone I at Almora, Bajoura, Kangra, Barapani; Zone II at Delhi, Ludhiana, Karnal, Pantnagar, Kanpur; and Zone IV at Hyderabad, Karimnagar, Mandia, Coimbatore and Kolhapur, Arbhavi in these three years. It ranked first in 9 out of 16 locations for yield indicating a wider adaptability of this variety. Over three years it exhibited an average yield of 6609kg/ha in Zone I, 4536kg/ha in Zone II and 4195kg/ha in Zone IV. Vivek Maize Hybrid 21 showed a yield advantage of 41.4%, 31.7% and 29.4% in Zone I, Zone II and Zone IV, respectively. Vivek Maize Hybrid 21 is yellow, semi-dent, flat and bold with average 1000-grain weight of 358 g. It matures in 85–90 days in hills and 80–85 days in plains. The plant is characterized by medium ear placement, cylindrical ear shape, 16–18 cm ear length, 16–17 cm ear girth and 1618 regular kernel rows per ear. The tassel is large and open with purplish anther and silk colour.
