Notification of Vivek Maize Hybrid 23 for organic cultivation

Vivek Maize Hybrid 23 is a single cross hybrid (V 351 x V 341) developed by Vivekananda Parvatiya Krishi Anusandhan Sansthan (ICAR), Almora and was released by State Varietal Sub-committee and subsequently released and notified by Central Sub-committee on Crop Standards, Notification and Release of Variety (Vide Notification No. SO 122 (E) dated 6.2.2007) for the commercial cultivation under organic conditions in Uttarakhand hills.

Vivek Maize Hybrid 23 was selected as a hybrid in station trial for yield and other ancillary attributes Experimental Farm, Hawalbagh and subsequently tested in State Varietal Trials as FH 3259 for three years by State varietal Trials. Over three years it exhibited an average yield of 5773kg/ha in Uttarakhand hills under organic conditions and it also performed equally good in inorganic conditions (5886kg/ha) in three years testing in IET/AETs. During these years ‘Vivek Maize Hybrid 23’ was evaluated at Hawalbagh, Gwaldam, Chinyalisaur, Majhera, Thal, Lohaghat, Gaja and Bhaiswara.

The grains of ‘Vivek Maize Hybrid 23’ are yellow, flint, flat and bold (1000-grain weight: 340 g). The anthers are light purple and silk are dark pink in colour. Cylindrical ears has medium placement on the plant. The ear length and breadth is 16–18 cm and 15–16 cm, respectively with 14–16 regular kernel rows. ‘Vivek Maize Hybrid 23’ attains an average height of 208 cm and matures in 90–95 days in mid hills. The female (V 351) and male (V 341) parental lines differ from each other with respect to leaf size, glume colour, silk colour and grain colour.
