Jaldi dhan-6 (PNR-551,IET 14359 and IC 538544) is an upland very early duration variety developed by the Division of Genetics, Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi and released by Orissa state variety released committee(Vide Circular No. 2M-(05)-28/2008/598 dated 2.4.2008 of Director of Agriculture & Food Production- Govt. of Orissa) and notified by the Central Sub-committee on Crop Standards and Crop Varieties, vide notification SO. 1448 dated 16-10- 2008. It is developed from a cross, Dular Mutant/Nagina 22 mutant. Jaldi dhan-6 recorded 25.4% increased yield over Heera (National Check) in direct seeded rainfed conditions and also shown 88.3% yield increase over Heera(National Check) in transplanted condition.
The variety Jaldi dhan-6 has moderate resistance against insects and pests, namely, White Back Plant Hopper (WBPH), leaf folder, stem borer and moderate resistance against diseases, namely rice blast, neck blast and bacterial leaf blight, sheath rot and brown spot. The variety Jaldi dhan-6 has 64.5% (milling percentage), 53.1 Head Rice Recovery (HRR), 5.59 mm kernel length before cooking, 2.34 mm kernel breadth before cooking, 2.39 mm length/breadth ratio with 2.4 alkali value. The variety Jaldi dhan-6 has been recommended for Eastern region of India for rainfed upland conditions mainly in Orissa state, although this variety can be grown in rainfed upland areas of Jharkhand, Bihar and West Bengal also specially as a contingency crops after natural calamity, pre/post floor crop in flood prone areas. The plant type of this variety is semi-dwarf with height of 100 cms. It produces light green foliage, long and compact panicles, medium bold grains, with reddish coloured husk. The maturity period of this variety varies from 65 to 75 days in kharif season depending on the location and production conditions. The variety can also withstand in-season stress situation considerably.
