Abstract

1. An eighteen-year-old citrus orchard was cover cropped with berseem, lucerne and methi.

2. All the cover crops increased the nitrogen content of the soil.

3. Both in yield of green fodder and added nitrogen, berseem ranked first. Lucerne and methi were comparable, though the former proved slightly better than the latter.

4. Berseem has been recommended as the best winter cover crop provided irrigation facilities exist.
