Small abortive embryos dissected out of hybrid seeds from crosses of L. esculenlum and L. peruvianum could not be grown in culture media. Raising of small seedlings was only possible when heart-shaped embryos were used from occasional big seeds. But the seedlings were very sickly and died after transplanting. When these heart-shaped embryos were planted first in a medium containing 50% coconut milk and then transplanted on a second medium without coconut milk after a week the embryos had a healthy start. Some of these seedling grew up to be vigorous unfruitful plants. When L. esculentum was backcrossed by these F1 plants the resulting fruits had abortive seeds. It is suggested that the help of embryo culture should again be taken to raise subsequent generations till a fruitful progeny with normal behaviour is achieved.
