Abstract

The results reported have shown that whereas the cherry seed of commercial varieties failed to give an appreciable germination, the wild cherry (Prunus cerasoides) seed gave good germination.

Sowing the seed in April-May soon after its extraction from the mature fruit gave a high germination thereby showing that it had any little or no rest period.

Nine month old seedlings could be successfully grafted in the month of January by the ordinary tongue method and saleable grafted cherry plants were obtained within two year of sowing the seed.

These findings may solve the problem of propagation of cherry plants and prove of great practical utility to nurserymen and fruit growers in the hilly areas.
