The present investigation was carried out to study the effects of different concentrations of NAA, applied to seedling roots, on growth, quality and yield of tomato, Marglobe and BE6. The seedlings were soaked for 24 hours in dark in the solutions of various concentrations of NAA, in water only and control.
The growth of the plants was maximum in treatment where 0.1 ppm of NAA was applied. The higher and lower concentrations were found inferior, though, they were found superior to the control. The treatments which influenced luxuriant vegetative giowth, were also responsible for inducing better root system.
The concentration of 0.1 ppm NAA proved its superiority in inducing flowering after 45 days where as water treatment induced flowering after 49 days in Marglobe. The number of flowers and percentage of fruit set were also higher by this treatment. The maturity and ripening of the fruits were earlier.
Variety BE6 was superior in yield and also in the quality of the fruits. Sugar percentage and ascorbic acid content was a bit higher than the variety Marglobe. The plant regulator influence was somewhat alike in both the varieties.
Thus, it can be concluded that 0.1 ppm of NAA can be effectively used, for seedling treatments of tomato to get early and higher yields of quality fruits. The concentration of theplant regulator depends upon the duration of treatment. This concentration can be used when duration of the treatment is 24 hours in particular environmental conditions.
