Abstract

The effect of locations and date of sowing on flowering and vegetative responses of eighteen diversely adapted been varieties was studied. Varieties took more days to flower, produced fewer nodes and shorter internodes under field than under greenhouse conditions. The estimates of components of variation for three plant responses showed that the environment had significant effect on differential response of varieties. High heritability was found for number of days to flower and internode length. In the case of node number the variety x location component of variance was high, thus rendering the varietal component as insignificant. The implication of these findings in the future improvement programme in beans is discussed.
