Abstract

The present studies were conducted on Purple Top White Globe variety of turnip, for three years i.e., 1965, 1966 and 1969, to find out, whether root size had any effect on seed yields and the quality of seed. The seed yield data was recorded for all the three years, whereas the other five characters, i.e., mortality of roots, plant height, number of primary branches, thousand grain weight and germination percentage, were studied in 1969 only. It was observed that the treatment with large sized roots put up more vigorous growth by way of more number of primary branches leading to significantly greater seed yields than the other two treatments with medium and small roots. The mortality of roots was also significantly lower in plants with large sized roots. However, seed size and germination were not affected by the root size.

It may be concluded that bigger sized roots give higher seed yields and the viability and thousand grain weight are not influenced by size of steckling.
