Abstract

Fungal flora of onion seeds collected from Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh during the years 1966 to 1968 was studied. Fungi belonging to nine different genera were recorded. Of these Rhizopus macrosporus, R. arrhizus. R. nodosus, R. oryzae, Aspergillus niger, Fusarium equiseti, F. semitectum, Fusarium sp., Thielavia sp., Alter-naria porri, Cochliobolus spicifer, Phoma glomerata and Phyllosticta species were identified. Species of Phyllosticta, Alternaria porri, Phoma glomerata and Cochliobolus spicifer were found to be internally seed borne in addition to their external infection on the seeds. Pathogenicity of Phyllosticta sp., Phoma glomerata and Alternaria porri was established. The seed borne nature of Thielavia sp., Cochliobolus spicifer, Phoma glomerata and Phyllosticta sp. has been observed for the first-time, whereas, Cochliobolus spicifer is a new fungus record from India on this host.
