Abstract

Studies were made to find out the possibilities of improving rooting of cuttings in fig by pre-girdling the canes at different intervals and using such canes from different positions like proximal and distal end. Pre-girdling 30 days prior to planting was found to be better in both proximal and distal end cuttings in respect of percentage of rooting. Maximum number of roots, maximum root length were found with 30 days girdled cane of distal end cuttings. Early rooting was observed in 30 days girdled cane with both proximal and distal end cuttings i.e., in 28 days, whereas in control with proximal end cuttings rooting was late and it took 91 days. Percentage of rooting, number of roots developed per cutting and length of roots were less in all the corresponding treatments of proximal end cuttings as compared to distal end cuttings. The 30 days girdled cane with distal end cutting proved to be significantly superior over all other treatments with respect to earliness of rooting, the percentage of rooting, number of roots and length of roots.
