With a view to ascertain the nature of response in growth and phosphate uptake of cowpea (Vigna sinensis) a common green manure crop, to four levels of phosphate (0, 30, 60 and 90 kg P2O5/ha) field trial was conducted in a randomised block design with five replications during winter season of 1971–72. The results indicated that the green and dry matter production increased with increasing level of phosphate. The response curves were fitted for green and dry matter production and phosphate uptake with varying phosphate levels. With the help of the response equations the maximum limit of phosphate fertilization was specified which will have practical utility in deciding the fertilizer rate for cowpea for green manuring.
