Abstract

1. In both Columbia and Hill cultivars, four distinct growth flushes were observed, which initiated in March, May—June, July and October. There was significant variation in extention growth, leaf size, number of leaves and leaf area per shoot in different growth flushes.

2. July flush was most productive in Columbia, followed by March, May— June and October flushes. In Hill, there was practically no flowering on any of the flushes in the spring of 1964.

3. The extension growth and leaf area per shoot were more in terminal shoots than the lateral ones. In Columbia, number of flowering shoots were also more in the terminal position.

4. A strong tendency of alternate bearing was observed in individual shoots of Hill lemon in subsequent years. This tendency was, however, present to a little extent in Columbia.

5. A positive correlation between extension growth, size of leaf, number of leaves and leaf area per shoot to flowering was observed.
