To study the response of nitrogen and phosphorus fertilization and to determine economic optimum level for muskmelon var. Arka Jeet, field trials were conducted during summer seasons of 1971 and 1972, at the Indian Institute of Horticultural Research, Bangalore. Three graded levels each of nitrogen and phosphorus were tried. Use of production function was made and response surface was fitted to specify economic optimum levels of nitrogen and phosphorus valid for different prices of crop produce. The optimum fertilizer rate under existing price situation is 106 kg N and 122 kg P2O5 per hectare yielding about 99 q/ha of ripe fruit. The maximum limit of fertilization was found to be 125 kg N and 158 kg P2O5 per hectare yielding about 104 q/ha of ripe fruits.
