Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana
A study on 40 onion varieties was carried out to find the extent of relationship of seed yielding capacity with other important plant characters at Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana during 1970–71. Seed yield per pant was positively and significantly correlated with number of seed-stalks per plant and weight per umbel. Partial regression of seed yield on seed-stalks per plant was significant and this character alone accounted for 49.49 per cent of variability in seed yield, whereas seed, stalks and umbel weight together accounted for 58.77 per cent of variability. Selection based on all the component characters accounted for 67.20 per cent variation in seed yield. The discriminant function based on seed-stalks and umbel weight was highly significant and most efficient.
