Abstract

The present studies were based on the performance of twenty five F1 hybrids and five pollen parents, Sel 3–13 x Sel 1–2 was found to be the best hybrid combination giving 32.96 per cent higher yield than the best variety, Sioux. The other promising hybrids were Sel 1–2 x S-12 and Sel 1–2 x West Verginia on the basis of the higher commercial values. Decrease in weight per fruit of larger fruited varieties was more than compensa ted by the increase in number of fruits. Two functional male sterile lines, Sel 3—13 and Sel 1–2 were found to be good combines and can be used for hybrid seed production.
