Abstract

Sand culture studies were conducted on mango with the object of producing characteristic foliar deficiency symptoms and establishing critical levels for various macro-elements. Deficiency symptoms were developed for nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium magnesium and sulphur by growing young mango seedlings in nutrient media containing all the essential elements in satisfactory concentrations except the elements of which deficiency symptoms were to be induced. Leaves were sampled for analysis just at the time when deficiency symptoms first became noticeable and also when they had fully developed. Symptoms of deficiency for various macro-elements as exhibited by leaves of Dashehari mango seedlings have been described. Based on the results of foliar analysis, tentative, lower critical values for various macro-nutrients have been suggested.
