Abstract

A pruning experiment in which the length of cane was varied inversely to the number of canes on the vines, the total number of buds on the vines held constant, was carried out over three years with Thompson Seedless vines. Per cent bud burst on the vines was not affected by cane length but fruitfulness, as expressed by per cent fruitful shoots and yield, increased with the increasing number of buds on the cane. Long cane pruning (10–14 buds) is recommended for this cultivar in North India.
