Abstract

An experiment was conducted to study the effect of mulching on sprouting, vegetative growth, yield and quality of two potato varieties Kufri Chandramukhi and Kufri Sindhuri raised from whole and cut seed tubers. Mulching hastened and improved the sprouting in potato seed tubers. Mulching did not help in improving the number of stems per hill but cut tubers produced more stems than whole tubers Mulching enhanced the plant height at the early stages of growth. It improved the yield of crop both under cut as well as whole tuber seed conditions. Mulching increased the moisture and starch content of tubers whereas the ash and protein contents were reduced.
