Breeding of Apple Varieties in Himachal Pradesh

With a view to combine the keeping quality with high dessert quality, breeding programme was taken up at the Regional Fruit Research Station, Mashobra in the year 1960. The parents used were Red Delicious, Starking Delicious and Richared as mother and Ambri as male parent. A fairly large number of hybrid seedlings were raised. These were evaluated in respect of the tree vigour, yield, fruit quality etc. Considering all these Characters, the hybrids Red Delicious x Ambri 157, Starking Delicious X Ambri 82 and Richared X Ambri 15 appear to be very promising.
