Abstract

Morphological, anatomical and physico-chemical changes associated with the growth and development of passionfruit was studied during 1974–75. The whole period of the growth and development has been divided into three distinct stages and discussed. Fruit length, breadth and volume increased to the maximum extent within 25 days and thereafter changes were negligible. The fruit weight increased rapidly for the first 25 days and then againit was resumed after 45 days and continued upto the 60th day. The increase was negligible afterwards. T.S.S. and sugar increased till the 80th day. Non-reducing sugar started declining after 80 days while, reducing sugar was maximum on the 85th day. Ascorbic acid declined till the 60th day and thereafter no appreciable changes were noticed. Acidity first increased and then declined till the day of harvest. Passionfruit can be harvested between 80–85 days when the fruits start turning to purple in colour and sugar, acidity and ascorbic acid contents are at optimum level.
