Abstract

The preferred method of propagation in Dioscorea floribunda is through tuber pieces. The cut tuber pieces fall into three categories i.e., i. Crowns, ii. Medians and iii. Tips. This study has revealed that the plants raised from crown portions out yielded the plants raised from medians and tip portions of the tuber. Crown portions also contain relatively less diosgenin (Selvaraj et al., 5). Therefore, for commercial plantings only crown portions of the tuber should be used. The tuber pieces of 40 to 50 gm with closer spacings are to be preferred.
