Morphological characters and meiotic behaviour of F1 hybrids from interspecific cross between S. incanum and S.melongena var. Giant of Banaras were studied in comparison with parents. The hybrid was superior to their parents and had manifested heterosis in some important quantitative characters. The cytological studies of F1 hybrid and their parents revealed the normal course meiosis. However, univalents were observed at metaphase I. Anaphase I, with laggards were recorded. The interfertility of the parental species indicates they represent a single gene pool. The vigour of the hybrid and normal course of meiosis with high percentage of pollen fertility indicates a close genetic relationship between the two species.
