Abstract

Studies on the seed germination and growth of polyembryonic seedlings showed highest germination in Cv. Olour (75.93 per cent) and the lowest in Cv. Nekkare (40.57 per cent). Germination in certain varieties was adversely affected by the presence of stone weevil. The number of embryos per stone ranged from 2 to 10 while the number of seedlings from 1 to 7. Moovandan and Vellai Columban cultivars produced the largest number of seedlings per stone followed by Bappakai, Kurukkan and Olour. Bappakai stones took minimum time of 47 days for complete germination. The plants of Bappakai and Moovandan showed vigorous growth than other varieties. Still the first seedling in all the varieties became suitable for grafting within a year. Cultivars Chandrakaran, Goa, Olour and Kurukkan showed less vigour and shorter internodes.
