In the study on pecan nut germination conducted at Palampur it was revealed that significant varietal differences existed in the extent of germination in the six cultivars. The maximum germination was in ‘Nellis’ and the minimum in ‘Success’. The final germination was not affected significantly by the stratification when compared with direct sowing in the beginning of winter season. Between different cultivars improper nut filling but hot nut size affected seedling vigour. ‘Caloro’ produced maximum seedlings of almost maximum vigour per kg nut.
In another experiment on nine pre-sowing treatments direct sown whole nut in early winter showed the highest (77.5 per cent) germination and the nuts sown after cracking the lowest (30.0 per cent) stratification and soaking in GA only hastened the germination.
