Abstract

From the studies carried out to determine the variations among the chilli cultivars, it was observed that height, number of leaves, fresh weight and per cent dry weight of seedlings of Kalyanpur Red and Jwala contributed to their vigour and higher percentages of establishment. Plants of G-4 were the tallest, while those of Jwala were the shortest. N. P. 46-A had the highest number of branches followed by Kalyanpur Red. Kalyanpur Red was the earliest and recorded the maximum fruit set, while G-4 was the last with the minimum fruit set. Auxin treatments markedly improved fruit set compared to control in all the cultivars. Length of fruit attained the maximum around the 30th day after fruit set. The longest fruits were recorded in Jwala, while they were the shortest in Kalyanpur Red. Volume of fruit generally reached its peak 30 days after fruit set, and the fruits of G-4 were the thickest and heaviest which also recorded the maximum per cent dry weight.
