The respnose of Ethrel and 2,4-D on three banana cultivars Poovan, Monthan and Nendran was studied. Ethrel application reduced the pseudostem height and girth and leaf number and size but it remarkably increased the production of suckers. Ethrel treatments delayed the shooting and extended the total cropping period, and caused reduction in the number of hands, fingers and bunch weight. On the other hand, 2,4-D at 25 ppm without Ethrel application appreciably increased the bunch weight, advanced the maturity of bunches and improved the quality of fruits.
