Abstract

Khatoon-Trail is a tetraploid apple with 2n = 68. Multivalent formation during pollen mother cell meiosis suggests sufficient homology among its constituent genomes. Despite multivalent type of pa;ring, anaphasic disjunction is regular and seed set abundant. Inferior fruit quality of Khatoon-Trail suggests that polyploids may not be of direct utility. Nevertheless, tetraploids hold promise for utilization in programmes of evolving triploids which have better selective value.
