Variability and correlations were studied in a collection of thirty-nine varieties of brinjal at Vegetable Research Farm, Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana. A wide range was observed particularly in number of fruits, weight of fruit, yield per plant and insect incidence. Yield per plant, number of fruits, breadth of fruit, weight of fruit and insect incidence were found to have comparatively high phenotypic and geno-typic coefficient of variations than other characters. All the characters except height of plant and number of days to first harvest showed high heritability with high genetic advance (per cent of mean). Total yield per plant was highly correlated with height of plant, number of branches, weight of fruit, marketable yield, unmarketable yield and insect incidence. It appears that these characters may be used for selecting high yielding plants in brinjal.
