Abstract

A survey of 12 Litchi ochards in different locations of West Bengal was undertaken. The observations from two years studies during 1978 and 1979, reveal that there is a wide variation in leaf, soil nutrient status and yield of the orchards. The concentration of N, P & K in leaves gradually deci eased from the flowering stage (January) to harvest of fruits at the end of rainy season (September). Significant variation in leaf N and K, between selected high and low yielding plants are also evident. The correlation studies between leaf nutrient concentration and yield indicate that the leaf nitrogen at three stages of sampling and potassium after harvest are positively and significantly correlated with yield for the average of 1978 1979. Thus fruit yield is directly correlated with the nutrient status of leaves as well as soil. Among the leaf nutrients, leves of N, P & K were found below the optimum level. Most orchards showed poor soil NPK status in West Bengal.
