Abstract

The number of vegetative flushes a litchi tree puts forth is varietal in nature. Dehra Dun and Calcuttia were found to have three and Seedless Late six flushs in a year. Regularity of bearing in Dehra Dun was due to the capacity of new shoots from the bearing terminals to become fruitful again the next year. This capacity was lacking in the new shoots from bearing terminals of Calcuttia and Seedless Late. Hence they exhibited erratic bearing. Vegetative growth after September was observed to lead to erratic bearing in Calcuttia.
