In vitro response of Carica papaya L. tissues was evaluated with respect to in vivo treatments, seasonal fluctations and sex type of the plant. The results obtained indicate that seasonal fluctuations and sex type of the papaya plant can have an overbearing influence on the behaviour of explants in vitro. The phenomenon of apical dominance suppresses the growth of explanted lateral buds in vitro. In vivo sprays of GA3, MH and a morphactin could not overcome this suppression. Decapitation of the papaya plant, however, did considerably improve in vitro response of the lateral buds.
