Abstract

About 7 month old potatoes were given treatments with morphactin at 0, 10, 50 mg l−1 and 0, 100 and 200 mg l−1 maintained at 10 ± 2°C and 16 ± 3°C respectively. Weight loss and sprout growth were reduced effectively by 100 and 200 mg l−1 morphactin. Degradation of starch could be controlled by 50 mg l−1 for a period of 10 days while higher concentrations were effective for 20 days. These concentrations resulted very low amount of reducing sugars but could not prevent markedly the loss of ascorbic acid. Therefore, post-harvest morphactin treatment even after 7-month of low-temperature storage could maintain the storage quality of potatoes at room temperature atleast for 20 days.
