Diallel analysis in chilli indicated importance of both general and specific combining ability variances for all the characters. In a set of diallel crosses of 10 diverse varieties, parents J-218, B.R Red, Sindur, Lam X-235 and Pusa Jwala were the best general combiners for most of the charncters. The cross Pusa Jwala X Sindur was found to possess the maximum sea effect for dry yield per plant and specific combiners for most of the quantitative characters indicating heterosis breeding for the improvement of this crop.
