Petal explants from unopened flower buds of Dianthus caryophyllus cv. Arthur Sim were grown on basal MS medium with different concentrations of auxins and cytokinins. Direct shoot differentiation from the base of the petal explants was observed after three weeks. High percentage of differentiation was discernible when IAA and BAP were used in combination of 2: 1 mg/l. Use of 2,4–0 with BAP resulted in only callus formation.
