Abstract

Higher activity of 14C was found in young but fully expanded leaves as compared to mature ones. The translocation of synthesized photosynthates from leaf to the fruit varied with the advancement of growth. Following the 14CO2 exposure, the label was incorporated into carbohydrate fraction of photosynthates and the major part of the activity in the shoot and leaf was found in sorbitol. The rate of export of soluble sugar from leaves was proportional to the rate of fruit growth. In the early stages of fruit growth, the label was incorporated into sorbitol but most of radioactive label was recovered from glucose and fructose fractions as growth advanced.
