Abstract

Viable cuttings of Anab-e-Shahi exposed to ethyleneimine to induce resistance to mildews and anthracnose as also desirable fruit qualities suggested survival of mutants to be more at lower concentration of ethyleneimine. Of 360 cuttings, only 21 survived and 17 have started bearing. Among these, 7 mutants have yielded significantly more than parent variety. These include one seedless mutant (Am 302) and one partially seeded mutant (Am 594). The TSS in Am 302 was 23.4°Brix and 22.6°Brix in Am 594. Of these 17 mutants, only one mutant was moderately resistant to downy and powdery mildews and anthracnose, though its yield and TSS were relatively less. The mutants, Am 594 and Am 588 were promising for resistance to downy mildew and anthracnose, having desirable fruit qualities. Such mutants would give more returns to the growers. Similarly, the seedless mutant (Am 302) is also promising as it has higher TSS and yield.
