Abstract

In a study with 6 × 6 diallel analysis (without reciprocals) in papaya (Carica papaya L.) at Bhubaneshwar and Keonjhar indicated that the mean squares for general combining ability were larger than those of specific combining ability in all the characters except fruit length. Pusa Majesty showed highest general combining ability effects for 3 characters, including fruit weight and yield. Bhubaneswar Local recorded highest specific combining ability effect for 5 characters, including earliness and quality and Pusa Giant for 3 characters including dwarf habit. In most of the cases best performing hybrid recorded highest specific combining ability effects. Pusa Giant × Bhubaneswar Local recorded highest specific combining ability effects followed by Pusa Majesty × Co 6, Pusa Delicious × Bhubaneswar Local.
