During a survey in north-eastern region and Andaman-Nicobar Group of Islands, three variants of cultivated M. sylvatica and two wild species M. andamanica and M camptosperma were identified. The three dwarf cultivated types, which were precocious, regular bearing and polyembry-onic, indicated that the primitive characters still persist in the region. These three differ in growth and fruit characters, the seedlings raised are true to type and flower within 18 months of sowing. Apart from these types one wild type, which seems to be a hybrid between M. caloneura and M siamensis was also identified in this region.
