Two widely used basal media supplemented with various concentrations of BAP were tested for germination and growth of Cymbidium giganteum. Out of the two media tried, Knudson's C was found to be the best for seed germination and protocorm development. Early germination and protocorm development were optimum when Knudson's C medium was supplemented with 0.5 mg/litre BAP. The immature embryo turned green within 60 days and developed into protocorms by another 20 days in this medium. However, for further rapid multiplication of shoots, MS supplemented with 0.25 mg/litre was optimum. Medium devoid of any hormonal supplements was found best for root development.
