Role of cyanide in necrosis of malformed tissues of mango

Abstract

Extracts of malformed vegetative tissues of Ramkela, Bombay Green and Khasulkhas cultivars of mango exhibited higher protein content than that of the healthy tissues. Compared to healthy tissues, the specific activity of β-cyanoalanine synthase (β-CAS) decreased to 60, 62 and 66% in malformed tissues of Ramkela, Bombay Green and Khasulkhas cultivars respectively. Higher levels of β-CAS activity in the healthy tissues suggests that greater amounts of HCN is metabolized in the healthy than in the malformed tissues in which accumulation of toxic levels of cyanide results in necrosis of malformed tissues.
